There Is a Crack in Everything, That Is How the Light Gets In -I — L. Cohen

This unique porcelain wall sculpture is part of my body cast series, in which each piece begins with a cast of my own body and is then shaped and transformed by hand in porcelain.

For this work, I used white porcelain, building up layers and firing the sculpture several times to create its distinctive crackled surface. I fired it at 1250°C with a transparent glaze, then individually hand-painted the cracks with gold enamel and lustre. The contrast between the white porcelain, the delicate cracks and the gold creates a surface that catches and reflects the light.

The porcelain body sculpture is mounted on a white wooden backing and is designed to hang on the wall like a painting. The work explores the relationship between the human body, fragility, transformation and light.
